Festival of Speed

Commemorating the 90th anniversary of Sir Henry Segrave’s land-speed record

12-20 March 2016

For the first time in 90 years, the original record breaking car – the Sunbeam Tiger – driven by Sir Henry, returns to Southport. And it will be reunited with its sister car, the Cub, in collaboration with the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

The highlight of the festival is Wednesday 16 March, when the Sunbeam Tiger, plus over 40 vintage cars from across Europe will re-enact the record attempt. This event is an unmissable spotlight on remarkable cars and remarkable drivers, and celebrates Southport’s unique place in motor-racing history.

We do hope you can join us on the beach in Ainsdale from approximately 10am. Obviously, the event is dependent on the weather being kind to us.

Full details can be found on our website

The beach event will be followed by an afternoon and evening of fascinating talks.

Saturday 19th March is another highlight of the Festival, when Southport hosts an historic and vintage car parade. We are expecting over 50 pre-war vehicles; they will be on display in Kings Gardens from 10am, and will parade through the town, driving down Lord Street from 2pm.

The beach event and car parade are free events.
